GrapheneOS

A hardened, privacy-first Android experience. No Google by default, no bloat, no tracking.

GrapheneOS
Verified boot: green

Before you start

  • This wipes your phone completely. Back up everything.
  • Only works on Google Pixel devices (Pixel 6 and newer; Pixel 8+ recommended).
  • Requires a USB-C cable and a computer with Chrome, Edge, or Brave.
  • Unlocking the bootloader trips Play Integrity. GrapheneOS passes basic integrity, but some banking apps may still complain.
1

Check compatibility

GrapheneOS supports Pixel 6 and later. Older Pixels are end-of-life and no longer receive updates. Full device list.

recommended devices — 2025
Pixel 10a Pixel 10 Pro Fold Pixel 10 Pro XL Pixel 10 Pro Pixel 10 Pixel 9a Pixel 9 Pro Fold Pixel 9 Pro XL Pixel 9 Pro Pixel 9 Pixel 8a Pixel 8 Pro Pixel 8

Pixel 8 and later get 7 years of updates. Pixel 6/7 are supported but older.

2

Enable OEM unlocking

On your Pixel, go to Settings → About phone and tap Build number 7 times to enable Developer options.

Then go to Settings → System → Developer options and enable:

OEM unlocking
Allows the bootloader to be unlocked
USB debugging
Allows ADB access from your computer
3

Connect to your computer

Plug your Pixel into your computer with a USB-C cable. On the phone, tap Allow when prompted for USB debugging access.

Supported browsers for the WebUSB installer:

Chrome Edge Brave

Safari and Firefox are not supported for WebUSB flashing.

4

Boot into fastboot mode

Power off your phone. Then hold Volume Down + Power until the fastboot screen appears — a black screen with red/green text.

alternative: adb
$ adb reboot bootloader
5

Unlock the bootloader

On the fastboot screen, use volume keys to select Unlock the bootloader, then press Power to confirm.

This wipes your device. Do not skip this step.

6

Run the web installer

Open grapheneos.org/install/web in Chrome, Edge, or Brave.

Click Install GrapheneOS, select your device, and follow the prompts. The browser flashes the factory images directly over USB — no command line required.

Downloads ~2 GB. Takes 5–10 minutes depending on your connection.
7

Lock the bootloader

This is critical for security. After installation completes and the phone boots into GrapheneOS, power off and boot back into fastboot mode (Volume Down + Power).

Select Lock the bootloader, confirm with Power. The phone will wipe one more time and boot fresh.

Locking the bootloader re-enables verified boot and prevents tampering. Skip this and you leave the device open to physical attacks.

8

Verify installation

Boot into GrapheneOS. Go to Settings → About phone and confirm the build says GrapheneOS.

Check verified boot: boot into fastboot mode — it should show:

expected fastboot output
DEVICE STATE - locked
verified boot: green

Common concerns

The questions everyone asks before switching.

Can I use Google Wallet / contactless payments?

Mostly yes, with caveats. Google Wallet works via sandboxed Google Play. NFC and tap-to-pay function normally. However, some banks enforce Play Integrity ctsProfileMatch, which GrapheneOS fails (it's not Google-certified).

Reality check: Many users report Wallet works fine. If your specific bank is strict, use their app directly or a different payment method. The community compatibility list tracks which banks work.

Will my banking app work?

Usually yes. Most banking apps work with sandboxed Google Play installed. Some aggressive ones check for hardware attestation or use their own root detection.

Works: Most EU banks, Revolut, N26, Chase, Bank of America
May fail: Some UK banks, certain corporate apps, Google Pay in some regions

Do all my apps work?

Nearly all. GrapheneOS is fully Android-compatible. Apps from F-Droid, Accrescent, or direct APK work out of the box. Play Store apps work via sandboxed Google Play. The only exceptions are apps requiring deep Google integration (some Google apps, certain enterprise MDM tools).

Do push notifications work?

Yes. Apps with their own push implementation (Signal, FairEmail, most chat apps) work perfectly. Apps relying on Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) need sandboxed Google Play installed. Either way, you get notifications.

What about Android Auto?

Supported. Install via the GrapheneOS App Store with sandboxed Google Play. Requires granting specific permissions in Settings → Apps → Sandboxed Google Play → Android Auto. Works for both wired and wireless connections.

How do updates work?

Fully automatic. GrapheneOS checks for updates in the background and installs them seamlessly. You reboot when convenient. Security patches arrive within days of Google's monthly bulletin — often faster than stock Pixel updates from carriers.

Is the camera as good as stock?

Almost. The GrapheneOS Camera app is excellent and supports all hardware features. The Google Camera app (via sandboxed Play) also works if you want Google's computational photography. Some minor features like certain AI enhancements may differ.

Can I go back to stock Android?

Yes, easily. Flash the official factory image from Google using the same web installer method. Your warranty isn't voided by unlocking the bootloader (though carrier-locked devices may have restrictions).

After installation

Install apps

GrapheneOS ships with no Google services. You have options:

  • Accrescent — privacy-focused app store, preinstalled
  • F-Droid — open-source apps
  • Sandboxed Google Play — optional, runs in a restricted profile

Harden further

  • Disable USB debugging if you don't need it
  • Set a strong PIN/password (not biometrics alone)
  • Review Settings → Security → More security settings
  • Enable Auto-reboot (reboots if unused for a set time)

Troubleshooting

Browser doesn't detect the phone
Try a different USB-C cable (some are charge-only). On Linux, you may need udev rules. On Windows, install the Google USB driver. macOS usually works out of the box. Make sure you're in fastboot mode, not just the OS.
"OEM unlocking" is greyed out
The phone needs to be connected to the internet at least once after factory reset to check in with Google's servers. Connect to Wi-Fi, wait a few minutes, then try again.
Bootloop after locking bootloader
You flashed the wrong image for your device or the flash was corrupted. Boot into fastboot, unlock again, re-flash the correct factory image, and lock again. Double-check your exact model (e.g., Pixel 8 vs Pixel 8 Pro use different builds).
Banking app doesn't work
GrapheneOS passes basic Play Integrity but some apps check for hardware attestation or use aggressive root detection. Try installing via Sandboxed Google Play in a separate user profile. If that fails, use the bank's website or a different device for banking. Check the community compatibility list for your specific bank.
